1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Founded in 1861 in Cambridge, in the United States, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is ranked as the best university for master’s degrees in the United States and the world! The university, which is one of the world’s leading centers for study and research in engineering, science, and technology, has graduated 85 Nobel laureates (as of September 2022) and more than 120 thousand students.

Of the 11,300 students enrolled at the university, 4,500 are undergraduate students and 6,800 are graduate students. Graduate programs are done concurrently with undergraduate ones. However, students who are qualified at both levels can take many courses at the institution. In addition, MIT also offers professional master’s degrees and several doctoral programs.

2. Stanford University

Located in the Palo Alto region near Silicon Valley, California, Stanford University is ranked as the second most prestigious U.S. university and the third most prestigious in the world, according to Top Universities 2023. The institution, founded in 1891, is known as the university of entrepreneurs, as among its alumni and professors are the founders of large companies such as Google and Nike.

Of the approximately 15,000 students enrolled at the university, 9,300 are post-graduate students (master’s and doctorate). There are 90 departments and programs in all 7 of Stanford’s graduate schools, including Business and Engineering.

3. Harvard University

Founded in 1636 in the city of Cambridge, Harvard University is one of the most well-known universities in the world. Harvard ranks third among the best universities for master’s degrees in the United States and fifth in the world. This number is higher than in any other institution in the world!

The university has about 22,000 students and has 24 graduate programs. The Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) accounts for the majority of Harvard’s graduate programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences and offers Master of Arts and Master of Science.

4. California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

Founded in 1981 and located in Pasadena, in the US state of California, the  California Institute of Technology  is one of the main student research centers in Natural Sciences and Engineering, the fourth best American university and the sixth in the world. Caltech became famous around the world for the  cutting-edge research produced and for its high-tech laboratories , including the Rocket Propulsion Laboratory at NASA, the US space agency.

In current dimensions, Caltech, which offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses, is considered a small university, with just over 2 thousand students (comparatively, Harvard has around 10 times as many students). Of this number, just over half (1,200) are postgraduate students. 

5. University of Chicago

With just over 16 thousand students, the University of Chicago has more than 100 postgraduate programs in four postgraduate divisions (Biological Sciences, Humanities, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences), in addition to eight schools of professional education and continued, such as the Pritzker School of Medicine and the Booth School of Business.
